Editor’s Note: This is one in a series of stories about the work performed by Remedi EDI consultants, the value they bring to organizations, and the satisfaction their work brings them.

My Career Path: At one time, I was pre-med. I made great grades in high school and had high scores on my standardized tests, but after two years I decided it wasn’t for me and I took a break. After a series of entry-level jobs in banking and insurance, I audited a computer programming course at my community college and answered a question that had stumped the class. I was hooked and enrolled in the next term. After graduation, I accepted an offer to go into consulting with one of my professors.

My Breakout Project: Even before I got involved with EDI, my clerical jobs had shown me that it wasn’t efficient for Company A to print and mail their invoices to Company B, only to have Company B re-key it into their system. After a few years, an outerwear company approached me to write an EDI system and business rules for them because they needed to do EDI with a national department store chain. I jumped on the opportunity even though I had no experience with EDI up to then.

My Greatest Satisfaction: I’ve built a career as an independent EDI consultant around a technology that’s mature yet continues to evolve. I’ve gone from teaching myself EDI to engagements like monitoring and optimizing TrueCommerce and Microsoft Dynamics 365 environments. I do this because I like solving puzzles. And every day with EDI is a different puzzle. How do you make it work efficiently? How do you make it work effectively? I love working backward through the error chain to see which operation failed and then understand why it failed.
