Consultant Success Story:  The Client I Taught to Love Gentran

My Challenge: I've been a Gentran(: Server Windows) specialist for a really long time. Now I'm transitioning into more (IBM Sterling) B2B Integrator project work since more companies are migrating to new platforms all the time. The project that put me on that path involved a client who was struggling with a Gentran map issue. Basically they wanted to extract a particular file from one system and convert it to a map. It seemed like it should be simple but nobody could figure it out.

My Solution: The client was skeptical at first and he was getting tired of messing with it. I said, ‘Give it to me, I'll come back, and I'll show you it can be done.’ And I did. And he was floored. He said, 'I've had two other consultants tell me it was impossible to do. I said, ‘It's absolutely possible if you know how Gentran works.’ Maybe it sounds nerdy but I’ve loved puzzles since I was a kid, and I really love finding creative ways to extend what Gentran can do.

Results for My Client: Five years later, they’re still a client. They used Gentran forever because it’s stable. And if you know it like I do, it’s super flexible and it can handle complex setups and pretty intense processing demands. But needs change, and after a lot of due diligence and discovery with Remedi, we migrated them to Sterling Integrator. After converting the maps to support their move to SI, I’m looking forward to exploring creative ways to extend that platform’s capabilities for them too.
