Upgrade from BizTalk 2016 to BizTalk 2020 Before End of Support Deadline

Upgrade from BizTalk 2016 to BizTalk 2020 Before End of Support Deadline

Commercial Furniture and Furnishings Manufacturer

Situation:

With Microsoft BizTalk Server 2016 nearing the end of extended support, this omnichannel manufacturer of commercial furniture and furnishings faced a growing security and operational risk. The company relied on BizTalk as a central integration hub. Orders, invoices, payments, and other data moved through the platform between SAP, trading partners, and internal systems.

The company considered moving directly to Azure Logic Apps but ultimately chose a staged approach: migrate to BizTalk Server 2020 first, then plan its longer-term move without putting critical business communications at risk.

Solution:

The company requested Remedi’s BizTalk architect based on his work with the company during an earlier engagement. Drawing on experience upgrading nearly every version of BizTalk, Remedi’s consultant led the migration of ~20 applications and ~400 artifacts. These included roughly 200 maps, as well as schemas, orchestrations, custom pipelines, .NET components, and custom XSLT.

After compiling and deploying the applications on BizTalk Server 2020, the consultant created a detailed test plan. The plan involved unit testing each map and orchestration, including the individual business rules within more complex maps. The client team then moved into end-to-end, parallel, and user acceptance testing early. This let users trigger processes from SAP and other endpoints and confirm that data reached SAP, SFTP sites, and other destinations as expected.

Impact on Business:
Diligent unit testing helped the company complete the BizTalk migration two weeks ahead of schedule, leaving time for go-live support and stabilization. The upgraded environment went live, and the platform handled the load as expected. All of which minimized disruption to the integrations that support core business processes and led the customer to describe the migration as a “tremendous success.”
