An EDI Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is the beginning of the trifecta of holidays for our family - Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's. While it is always nice to get out of the regular routine and spend time with family and friends, there are always stresses. For me, it is the unpredictability of the day. I am an organizer, so I like to know what the game plan is. Who is bringing what? What time are guests arriving? What time will we eat? What time do we need to put the turkey in the oven? .. and the list goes on and on.

Happy_ThanksgivingOf course, the organized vision I have in my head never happens that way. My in-laws decide to come two hours earlier than we originally agreed on and we haven't showered yet, the turkey goes in late or takes longer than expected, and my husband decides to add a few more dishes that are never ready when everything else is.

Wouldn't it be nice if things operated more like an EDI environment?

How about if my in-laws' car sent me an 856 letting me know when they were arriving or if the oven sent me an 864 letting me know the turkey was not cooking as fast as intended?

To really go crazy…

  • 814 to invite guests and a receipt confirmation back
  • 832 or 879 to get the prices from the grocery store
  • 850 or 875 to order my Thanksgiving groceries
  • 856 so I know when my groceries will be arriving
  • 810 to get my grocery bill
  • 820 to pay for my groceries

Obviously, this is a little far-fetched, but the real time communication of every aspect of the Thanksgiving celebration would alleviate some of the stress for me :)
