Driving into work this morning I heard an astonishing fact....kids will eat 3,500 to 7,000 calories of Halloween candy tonight during and after trick or treat!   So, I thought I'd do a little research and follow up from our Halloween blog from last year regarding B2B integration called Optimizing the Retail Supply Chain: Lessons from a Candy Corn Maker.

Here are some fun facts for the 2nd most popular holiday (Christmas being #1):

  • In 2011 consumers spent $2.2 billion on Halloween, in 2013 it's projected that consumers will spend $2.8 billion, despite 1/3 of those surveyed saying they would spend less this year.
  • Candy Corn was originally called "chicken feed" in the 1880s and it was commonly used as food for livestock (the old boxes apparently even had a rooster on them).
  • Americans spend an estimated $6 billion on Halloween annually, including costumes, candy, and decorations.
  • Consumers plan to spend $330 million on PET costumes this year..see the most popular ones in the info graphic below.
