Where We Are Now.....After Learning EDI From A VHS Tape

The first quarter of 2014 has come and gone, for me it seems like it flew by.  We have been busy at REMEDI launching some new initiatives this year as I am sure you've seen with our new blog strategy.  In addition to that we're in the process of creating and launching some new videos.

I have been involved in IT since 1995 in one way or another.  My early days were help desk then I moved into EDI.  EDI had been around a while but there really weren't that many people "doing" it, or at least it seemed.  I was pretty much a self-taught mapper via VHS tapes, if you can believe that!  I still remember the conversation just like it was yesterday....

I was on the "Bench" after wrapping up a project and our account manager came to me and said "Do youVHS tapes know EDI?".  I was in my early 20s and eager to learn so I said "No, I have no idea what it is but I'll learn it".  So he handed me a stack of VHS tapes produced by Sterling Commerce and said we have a client meeting in 2 days, see what you can learn.

I diligently watched the 6 tape series over the next 2 days and went to meet the client.  Believe it or not, I got the job!  My EDI journey began with VHS tapes and a green screen.  Over the next few years I built my skills always eager to learn different tools.  I learned several tools; Gentran 400, Harbinger, Gentran Windows, and I am sure some I can't remember.  But every time someone asked me what I did and I said "EDI", I had to explain!  If I only had a dollar for every time I heard "What is EDI?".  Believe it or not, I still get that question.  So one of our initiatives in the first quarter was to answer that question.  Now, if you subscribe to our blog, you know the answer to that question but do you get tired of answering it?  Well now you can direct people to our brief EDI 101 Overview!

As a young consultant, I was also eager to get my hands on new tools, see what other products looked like.  If you're a lifetime Inovis mapper and you're like me, the chance to see what Gentran Windows looked like was a geeky kind of exciting!  Well, now you can check out our latest videos and get a peek inside.

I hope you will find these videos useful and as I clean out my garage, if I run into the old VHS tapes, I may have to find a way to post a portion for humors sake....oh how far we've come!
