After months of tirelessly working on a vaccine to prevent COVID-19, scientists triumphantly announced they had a viable product. Yet, in spite of the exciting news, questions arose about how it would be distributed. These questions brought up another topic: healthcare interoperability.

According to Paul Clark, Global Managing Partner with Ernst & Young, 84% of organizations are adapting their business models to address digital infrastructure weaknesses that were exposed by Covid-19’s disruption to the economy and society.

For years, experts in the healthcare industry have been talking about healthcare interoperability. However, it took the global pandemic in 2020 to really bring the topic into the spotlight. In spite of government mandates that aim to increase healthcare interoperability, payers and providers are still struggling to overcome challenges.

For a number of years, healthcare interoperability has been an issue which healthcare professionals, industry experts, and vendors discussed, but it never really got its due. Then, a global pandemic came along in 2020. Now, healthcare interoperability is finally getting the attention it deserves, especially at the federal level.
